How this is calculated

The figure is the final tax for a full year on this salary, divided by twelve. Here is how it is worked out, in the order the law sets.

  1. The gross salary is multiplied by twelve and rounded down to a whole hundred kronor. That is the assessed earned income.
  2. The basic allowance (grundavdrag) is deducted. It follows a schedule that depends on income, and is considerably higher for anyone who has turned 66 by the start of the year. What remains is the taxable earned income.
  3. Municipal and regional tax are charged at the municipality's own rates on the taxable income.
  4. National income tax is charged at 20% on the part above the national threshold.
  5. The public service fee is 1% of the taxable income, up to a cap.
  6. The burial fee is paid by everyone. The church fee only by members of the Church of Sweden.
  7. The general pension contribution, 7% of income up to a ceiling, is added — and credited back in full in the next step. It appears in the breakdown because it appears on the Swedish tax statement, but it costs nothing.
  8. The tax credits are deducted in order: for the general pension contribution, the earned-income tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag) and the earned-income reduction. The last two may only be set off against municipal tax.
  9. What remains is the tax for the year. Net pay is the gross salary minus that, divided by twelve.

Your employer withholds preliminary tax from a table that works in steps of 200 kronor, rounds the local tax rate to a whole per cent and leaves out the earned-income reduction. The monthly deduction on your payslip can therefore differ by a couple of hundred kronor from the figure here; the difference is settled in the annual assessment. The calculator covers ordinary employment income — not pensions, capital income, benefits in kind or self-employment.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in the calculation?

Municipal tax, regional tax, national income tax, the public service fee, the burial fee and — if you are a member — the church fee. From that we deduct the earned-income tax credit, the credit for the general pension contribution and the earned-income reduction. The calculation is for income year 2026 and ordinary employment income.

Why does it not match my payslip exactly?

Your employer withholds preliminary tax from the Swedish Tax Agency's tables. Those work in steps of 200 kronor, use the local tax rate rounded to a whole per cent and do not include the earned-income reduction. This calculator instead works out the final tax for a whole year and divides by twelve. The difference is normally a couple of hundred kronor a month, and it is settled once your tax return is assessed.

How much does the municipality matter?

A lot. Municipal and regional tax ranges from 28.93% to 35.65%. On 38,300 SEK a month that is a difference of roughly 1,597 SEK a month between the cheapest and the most expensive municipality. The national average is 32.38%.

What does the church fee cost?

The fee to the Church of Sweden averages a little over one per cent of taxable income and is decided by the parish. The calculator uses an average of the parishes in the municipality, so your own parish may sit slightly above or below it. The burial fee is paid by everyone, member or not.

When does national income tax start?

National income tax is 20% on taxable earned income above the threshold, which for 2026 is 643,000 SEK a year. With the basic allowance included that means a monthly salary of roughly 55,000 kronor before the first krona of national tax is charged.

Why is net pay higher from the age of 66?

Anyone who has turned 66 by the start of the income year gets both a much larger basic allowance and a larger earned-income tax credit. The difference is substantial — several thousand kronor a month at a typical salary — and it is deliberate: it is meant to make working on pay off.

Where do the tax rates come from?

Municipal and regional rates come from the Statistics Sweden database, church and burial fees from the Swedish Tax Agency's published rates per parish. The example above is calculated for an average municipality, where 38,300 SEK a month leaves 30,528 SEK after tax.
