Primary school teachers teach in the Swedish compulsory school (grundskola), which covers years 1 to 9, and are responsible for planning, assessment and grading. As a rule, a permanent post and the right to set grades independently require a teaching degree and a teacher's certificate from the National Agency for Education, which states the years and subjects the teacher is qualified for. Most are employed by municipalities, while many work at independent schools. Pay varies with experience, subjects, location and whether the teacher holds a lead teacher (förstelärare) post.
