Midwives provide care and support during pregnancy, childbirth and the period after, and also work with contraception advice and sexual and reproductive health. In Sweden a midwife must first be a licensed nurse and then complete a midwifery programme at advanced level, which leads to a separate licence from the National Board of Health and Welfare.
