Train operators drive passenger and freight trains; the group also includes drivers of commuter trains, metro trains and rail vehicles in industry. Drivers on the railway need a train driving licence from the Swedish Transport Agency and a complementary certificate covering the vehicles and routes they operate. Training is usually provided through higher vocational education (yrkeshögskola). Employers are passenger and freight railway companies, and pay varies with experience and type of service.
